Today the Barred Owl that my neighbor and I have seen out hunting in the daylight for several weeks, died at the base of a tree next to my birdfeeder. I'd been worried that it was starving as it looked so small and thin. Unfortunately, I seem to have been right. It was hard to witness this right out my desk window. Seems like the deep snow with a hard crust layer would threaten many such predators that feed on subnivean creatures.
