I ventured out on the Causeway this afternoon from the Colchester end. I did not wear my snowshoes, but the hike might have been easier if I had worn them. Still, the condition of the pathway was OK for walking. The flock of nearly 1000 Scaup (Greater:Lesser=4:1) has been in the same location on the east side of Law Island for a month. In addition, I counted 18 American Black Ducks, 3 Mallards, 12 Common Goldeneye, 18 Common Mergansers, 17 Ring-neck Ducks, 3 Redheads, and 2 Canvasbacks. Viewing conditions were excellent.
In addition 2 Horned Larks flew over my head on the way out to the "cut" and landed 50 or so yards down the trail. This is the first time I have seen Horned Larks in this location. They were foraging along the bare, wind-blown edges of the Causeway.
