Uneasy with identification of 14 Chipping Sparrows in North Bennington 3/24
I returned after work (4:30 PM) to the same spot hoping to confirm or re identify the birds.
There were 5 in the same general area. Getting a real good look in much better
light I could see that these are American Tree Sparrows not Chippers.
It was still very difficult to see the black stickpin on the breast, as they were
all puffed up due to the cold temp and wind.
The eye line was indeed more rufous then black, and here and there a hint of rufous wash on flank.
Sorry for causing a stir.
Next time I will call them Sparrow species.
