There definitely are iphone / ipod apps that enable recording with a plug-in mic. But I don't know of a portable parabolic that can be worn for hands-free operation. May very well exist -- just not something I'm familiar with.

Perhaps a note to Dr. Webster who is the Directory of the Macaulay Library would provide a short cut to learning whether such a device exists.

What I am considering is one you could wear on your head like a forehead spot light. It would also have to have a small recording device that was capable of downloading into the computer. Does such a thing exist for a reasonable price? If someone knows, can they provide links? Tape recording is too out of date I guess and the extra stuff needed to transfer it to digital. I just want something immediate for when that rare warbler is singing up a storm but buried in the foliage out of camera shot. Kevin (not Marie)
