I got very nice looks from about 20' away at a black-backed woodpecker today
(Tuesday, 6/7) just off the River Road, about 2-3 miles north of Damon's
Crossing. He was drumming away mightily on a broken-off tree stump about 10'
off the ground, and didn't care at all that he was being watched.
Unbelievably handsome bird!
Pretty quiet otherwise, except for the clouds of bugs! Deerflies are
definitely out.: Alder, willow flycatchers, yellow and chestnut sided
warblers calling. And a small flock of cedar waxwings working the trees
along the Moose River. However, I did see a female moose on the cut that
crosses the Victory/Burke Road, and two loons were swimming in Joe's Pond on
my way home.
Nice day in the Kingdom.
