While walking with my dog at Mills Riverside Park this late afternoon (without my binos) I began to hear the repeated "cu cu cu....cu cu cu cu" of the BLACK-BILLED CUCKO. After cursing myself for leaving my binos at home, I located where the singing was coming from and began to sing my own version of "cu cu cu cu". It took only a few moments before I noticed movement and located the bird in a tree about 20 ft in front of me and about 25 ft off of the ground. I watched it sing for about 30 sec and then to my surprise another B-B CUCKOO flew into the same tree. A few seconds later they both flew off to another nearby tree.
That was my 1st encounter at Mills Riverside Park with this species after almost 6 yrs of walking/birding there. My only other sighting of B-B Cuckoo was about 6 yrs ago at Dead Creek. I had my binos that time and had a good close look. I will be bringing my binos tomorrow..
