Tom Jiamachello noticed a large tract of land on the eBird map called
the Essex Village Forest – so we went looking for ways to access the
area. We parked at Founders Memorial School, walked down a path
marked Prairie Athletic Fields, and found ourselves in woods, then
open mowed fields, then woods again, and ended up at the Circ
Highway. The highlight was very close looks at male and female Indigo
Buntings, apparently close to the nest site. – Then we went to
Woodside. (The park has recovered beautifully from all the high
water, and bridges and walkways have been rebuilt.) The highlight
there was at least four Blue-Gray Gnatcatchers, maybe as many as six.
They were making several different noises, leading us to think there
might have been both adults and fledglings. We also got a great look
at a Yellow-throated Vireo.
Following is a list of birds seen or heard at both locations.
Maeve Kim - Jericho Center
Essex Town Forest
Great Crested Flycatcher
Eastern Bluebird - singing from atop a light pole in the school’s
Black-throated Green Warbler
(Both lists have been submitted to eBird.)
