You can use POP or IMAP to copy down all your mail. I'm not sure why
POP would be unfriendly to the network (as compared to IMAP), but it
wouldn't let you copy your other folders besides your INBOX.
Thunderbird will allow you to copy entire folders to a local mailstore
on your computer, or to another IMAP server. Go into a folder, select
all, then right-click and "Copy To" your destination folder. (If there
is no destination folder yet, create one first.)
