Axel Meyer works in evolutionary developmental biology, a field that has
generated critical perpectives on received ideas, not excluding the
centrality of natural selection as an evolutionary mechanism. These
challenges have become increasingly prominent at the biennial meetings of
the International Society for History, Philosophy and Social Studies of
Biology, where they have engaged the attention of many historians and
philosophers.
Meyer, on the other hand, is well-known in the field as a defender of the
traditional ("Modern Synthesis") perspective. He was an unlikely choice to
review Feyerabend's book, but the editors of PLoS Biology, having Kidd's
appreciative essay in hand with little justification for killing it, probably
enlisted Meyer for "balance," to placate their mostly mainstream
contributor pool and readership.
