A trip around Pomainville WMA in Pittford yielded 17 species this morning. Although mowing has begun, no unusual species were seen as a result. Sparrows were scarce with one Song and one, possibly two, Tree sparrows. Snipe along the ditches were a nice surprise.
Duck hunters were present (all waterfowl we observed were spared), but their presence convinced us that a distant black duck with a bright orange bill was a mechanized decoy. Not wanting to disturb the hunter we retreated - Ted Murin later discovered it was a Black Scoter, a first for this location and a good laugh for us.
