Hi - I band birds in eastern NY and last year at a banding site in Montgomery County just south of Amsterdam, NY observed woodcock nuptial display flights predawn on frosty mornings in early/mid October. They are nice to see, but most certainly do not amount to anything productive. One can speculate that males are always practicing, but who knows.

Hard to believe it, but I just heard WOODCOCKS PEENTING here in Fayston! I
hought they only did that in the Spring. Any thoughts? Last night at around
:30 I had heard the twittering flight noises of WOODCOCKS and was surprised,
ut this morning's PEENTING really has me scratching my head.
