Yesterday, as I checked my feeders from the kitchen window, a young hawk dropped in on a small bird snack on the ground under the feeders (probably a Goldfinch or a Junco). I had less than 10 minutes to gather impressions as it flew to a tree 50ft away, and sat with it's back to me tearing into it's prize. It took me three bird books, the binos, and half an hour to finally ID this hawk as a juvenile Red Tail! Many thanks to Sue Wetmore for confirming for me from my notes.
