I guess this must be unusual, since it flagged on eBird, but Great
Black Backed Gulls are in Washington Co. Several of them were spotted
yesterday along Rt 2 in Moretown by two different observers (Scott
Sainsbury and myself) around the same time. It seems quite logical to
me that the gulls are there as the WSI landfill and Grow Compost are
next to each other, right across from the open and flowing Winooski
River! I observed 3 adults on a rock in the river in the company of 4
Herring Gulls. Scott called me when he saw one GBBG at the landfill,
and I observed 6 more at Grow Compost standing on the ridge of the
Great Black Backed Gulls were also observed in this same location on
the Winooski River back in December by Team Pipit and me...my last
'county bird' of 2011!
With this trend of gulls heading toward Central Vermont, I'm going to
keep my eyes open for Glaucous and Iceland Gulls! Who knows what the
next 'dump run' might turn up?
