Pair of ravens flying over Colchester Ave in Burlington today - I'm think
it might be the pair that nested year in the spring. Plus a dead red-tailed
hawk frozen about an inch and a half into the ice on top of the Winooski
River, wings still pliable though - any thoughts on how long rigor mortis
might last in a hawk? It seemed like it had probably been dead for a few
days and had snow on top of its body from the day before. The feathers were
pretty tattered and the bill was way more green than I would have expected.
I've never seen one so up close and was struck by how meaty that hallux is.
I'd be happy to take folks out to see it if interested.
