This has been tracked down to a real issue occurring briefly at exactly six hour intervals at 03:55, 09:55, 15:55, and 21:55 each day in recent days. The process that automatically purges data about old, unused webmail sessions has started blocking access to all session data long enough for the load balancer in front of the webmail servers to think that each of them is unresponsive and yank all of them out of service. In then adds them back shortly thereafter. Last night, I temporarily disabled the purging of old webmail sessions while I work on trying to make it happen faster.
