We've been going over some codes with a fine tooth comb. When scanning abdominal vessels I would like your opinion if we have been doing this properly. Here's how we have things set up:
93975 is our Renal Duplex which includes 2D, color and Doppler of aorta, renal arteries, renal veins, and arterial flow in both kidneys.
93978 is our Abdominal Duplex which includes 2D, color, and Doppler of the aorta and the iliac arteries. We also use this for mesenteric studes.
93979 we use for just AAA studies or the occasional IVC/iliac vein study.
The question has arisen as to why we would use the complete code for aorta/iliac arteries but the limited code for IVC/iliac veins?
I didn't have a good answer :)
According to the CPT book:
93978 "Duplex xcan of aorta, IVC, iliac vasculature or bypass grafts: complete study"
93979 is "unilateral or limited study"
I thought it was a good question, and I need the advice of my flownetters.
Have a great day!
