Took my ornithology students out this AM for our March bird census. As we left the building I shared that virtually every robin we see would be a male. Hardly had said that when we saw a pair of robins foraging at a mud puddle. Female grabbed a mouthful and took off. A little later we watched with amusement as a Euroean Starling tried to get through a crack with nesting material. Bird would fit but the nesting material would not. Kept jamming its head into the crack. My students started to coach the bird. "Turn your head sideways." "Try backing in."
