Thank you Bryan for your thoughtful and encouraging post.
It's sad to see this type of thread pop up and it does from time to time on
other birding list-serves too.
Some of you have heard me tell my story of being frustrated by the birding
community as a beginner birder. My breakthrough came in the Vermont birding
community, meeting and later searching out some of the most friendly and
gracious birders I have met anywhere. My gateway guides to birding...Jim
Shallow and Mark LaBarr at Audubon, the Pratts and Pat Folsom in the Mad
River Valley, Bryan Pfeiffer and Ted Murin, and Chip Darmstadt from North
Branch Nature Center. Multiply that by all the wonderful folks at Audubon
Chapters all over the state, and I finally fell hard for birding and saw my
So, my two cents...the list-serve is just one tool to help you become a
better birder. Find the way to use it best but search out other
opportunities, especially people, to help you build your passion for birds.
