In light of the many fine posts lately about misidentifications, I
had to share our experience of today at Berlin Pond. Just as we
arrived I noticed a large bird fly from a tree heading across the
Pond and landing in the cattail marsh. No chance to get the
binoculars on it. Looked like a Crow but...maybe bigger. I got my
binos out and kept them on the spot in the marsh. Suddenly up come
two large birds. Light is horrible and they are a far distance away
but the lead bird has, undeniably, a white head. Could it be an Bald
Eagle?!?! As they fly closer, it quickly became clear it was, in
fact, not a Bald Eagle but a Crow with a mouth full-very full-of
cattail fluff which nearly covered its head!
A special non-bird event was seeing a River Otter at the north end of
the Pond. We watched it dive and swim for several minutes and then
delighted in seeing it come up with a fish that must have been 12"+
in length. Fish in mouth, it headed to the far shore.
Bald Eagle or not, it was a good day. Still a pair of Bufflehead, as
well as a number of Hooded Merganzers, Canada Geese, and Mallards.
Still learning to see,
