After 2 1/2 hours of back and forth with Apple support ($$$) last night
the answer was simple:
iTunes does not play well with my PC's HP SimpleSave portable drive
backup software.
iRonically, after syncing/transferring files from the iPod , iTunes
automatically deletes my Music and Apps from the PC when the HP software
is trying to automatically back it up. The iPod was NOT synched with
any iTunes library.
iWorkaround: unplug the HP SimpleSave portable drive before running iTunes.
