Reset the PRAM (hold CMD+OPTION+P+R immediately after powering on the laptop. Hold until you hear the Apple bong twice.) If that doesn't do it then it's probably the power inverter which is typically a $20 part with about 20 hours of labor to pull the Macbook apart. Point the student to www.ifixit.com which will have both the part and clear step by step directions on how to replace it.

Subject: macbook battery
I have a student who brought in a macbook that has a new battery that isnt being recognized or charged.
The charge indicator lights on the batt are blank.
I have tried reseating and resetting the battery (shut off, pull ac, take batt out, hold power button for 5s, reinsert)
but to no avail
