I think the subject line of this whole thread is misleading. The aide wasn't fired for refusing to hand over her Facebook password. She was fired for acting unprofessionally. She happened to use Facebook to do it, and failing to realize that what you post on your facebook wall isn't really private, it's broadcast to all your friends, and, unless you set your privacy settings accordingly, the friends of your friends, or maybe the whole world. It's like announcing something at a huge dinner party or something, not like whispering something to a friend sitting next to you.
The school district had credible evidence (a parent complaint). The school district asked for the password to see if there was any evidence that the evidence they already had was less than credible, and the aide declined to provide it. Therefore the district acted on the basis of the only evidence they had (ie assuming the worst in this case simply means assuming that the evidence they already had was credible).
I suppose I would have handled the investigation a bit differently. I would have invited the parent in and asked them to show me the stuff on Facebook that was objectionable, rather than asking to see the aide's account. But I'm not sure the outcome would have been any different.
