We use a company called On-Line Credit Card Services out of Sturbridge, MA for our machines at stands and markets, and I think the average percent charged per transaction is about 1.8%. We have traveling versions of machines called NURIT that we use at markets which process the transactions offline, then we come home and plug them in and run the batch on the phone line - this is only a problem if someone gives you a bad card, which happens to us maybe once or twice per season per market.
For our farmstands, we have the credit card machine plugged into a live phone line and power, so the transactions run live. We also let people run their own cards when we are not around, with directions for how-to, and generally it works! The machine is locked down to the table with brackets. It auto batches out at night if we forget to batch out. We leave it in the barn over the winter, so far so good.
The company is great and very responsive.

Square phone app works great. They charge a very reasonable 2.75% and it's

Subject: Re: Credit card use at Farm Stand
Would appreciate hearing from anyone who has had favorable experience in
setting a way to handle credit card transactions at Farm Stand. I can
access Internet via smart phone, but do not currently have Internet service
at the barn.
