Saturday I reported a Ruffed Grouse hen with five or more young in
the eastern half of the goose viewing area at Dead Creek. I thought
this was a very unusual place for forest-breeding birds. Three other
birders have e-mailed me to suggest that I might have seen Ring-
Necked Pheasants, which have been observed in the area. That makes
much more sense! The hen – which I saw briefly as she flew away and
the little ones scurried into the grass – looked very long and
streamlined for a grouse.
