There is a Pileated Woodpecker nest with two young birds quite low down in one of the large birch trees at the Maple Street Pool in Essex Junction (the young birds are sizeable and are frequently visible peeking out of the hole).
Apparently a parent was seen coming and going by someone two weeks ago, but I haven't seen one after being here for over an hour. I have heard a call twice, but it sounded like it was coming from the nest itself, so I'm wondering if it could be one of the young birds calling.
I am worried for these young birds--the pool is a VERY busy spot and the nest is right in the middle of the action. The pool only opened in June 16th, so presumably nesting began before there were any people around.
The young birds are large and look nicely feathered, but aren't showing any sign of trying to fledge, and appear to be periodically begging for food.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?
