I had heard more than 99...
You have to solder the batt, and if the job sticks up too much, the case won't close. Yes it can be done, but you probably don't want to.
Throwing it away when the batt dies isn't very eco-friendly. It can work if you use Chinese labor, I guess.

Curious, I also found an article about changing batteries. Apple will "replace" the ipad for a 99.00 service fee. They warn you to sync up before sending in, because they replace the Ipad. http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/13/dead-ipad-battery-never-mind-replacing-it-apple-just-sends-ano/.
