And from this turtle behavior there rose the great creation story of Turtle Island ... thank you for recording it among your observations!Veer Frost, Passumpsic

A large lumpy mass of muddy Addison County clay moved ever so slowly
about in shallow waters as we counted sandpipers. But clods of mud don't
float, they don't make little trailing wakes, and they don't make
bubbles underwater as they go. ... With sandpiper counting on hold we
watched attentively ... and saw it was transported on the back of a
mostly underwater, trolling, large snapping turtle whose eyes and face
rose occasionally just barely above the water surface from time to time
several inches ahead of the dripping mass, looking like a tiny towboat
hauling a barge of dredging spoil slowly behind.
