Congressman Todd Akin's contention that, concerning the risk of
pregnancy following rape, "If it’s a legitimate [i.e., authentic] rape, the
female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down," has been
justly ridiculed and seen for the vicious attack on women's autonomy that
it is. But isn't this the style of thinking characteristic of sociobiology and
evolutionary psychology, inveterately given a pseudoscientific currency by
the field's popularizers, some of whom are also its academic practioners?
