This morning, around 7:30am I noticed a bird harassing the local Crow family. On closer inspection, it proved to be an immature Cooper's Hawk making a half hearted attempt to snare a bird of equal size. The Crows just shrugged the young upstart off.
From its perch it then spied a Gray Squirrel on a tree trunk and launched an attack. Of course the squirrel saw it coming and quickly moved out of the way. The befuddled hawk stood on the ground trying to figure out what happened.
By this time I had gone out to the screened in porch to watch the hawk's antics while Nancy, the cat, was busy watching a chipmunk on the ground below a window. The bird was now in a tree and spied the same Chippie that Nancy was watching. It launched, came sailing right toward the corner of the porch and missed again! What a great view as it flew within inches of us and then landed 20 ft away by the driveway. As it perched there It made a few low call sounds...perhaps it was using 'fowl' language;)
