With the persistent lack of rain, droughty soils, and hot dry air, birds
around the house are hiding out or perched bill a-gape panting in the
heat. The gardens needing nearly continuous watering I had today midday
a misting spray at work among colorful perennials and flowering shrubs.
A bit of motion caught my eye and there was the most gorgeous fluff ball
of a juvenile Yellowthroat standing in the mist ... brilliant yellow
throat and youthful soft grey wings and body glistening in the cooling
fog. Occasionally the youngster would shake away the bigger drops,
spread both down and feathers, and raise its head -- the only cool kid
in the neighborhood.
