This evening (July 31) while fishing at Benson Landing in Rutland County I heard
two Eastern Whip-poor-wills within a hundred yards of the fishing access at about
8:45 PM. This is purely anecdotal but I feel like I've been hearing more Whip-
poor-wills this year than ever before. While I have not recorded the dates I have
been hearing Whip-poor-wills regularly all along Bay Road in West Haven, Ward
Lane in Whitehall, and accidentally flushed a mother and two young on Great
Ledge in Fair Haven (my first every daytime sighting!). Has anybody else been
hearing them this year? I have wondered if the absence of common bat species
has lead to a release of larger moth populations that Whip-poor-wills feed on and
perhaps increased survival of young in recent years. Any thoughts? By far my
favorite bird.
This is my first post to the board, for those who care.
