While weeding the vegetable garden this afternoon I heard a rustle in the
flower bed next to the house and out pops an immature Cooper's hawk; it
made a dash to the vegetable garden and then flew off. Our dog walked into
the garden and wouldn't leave. After poking through the beets and asparagus
beds to figure out what the dogs was detecting I found a freshly killed
song sparrow that the Cooper's had gotten at some point during the drama.
Very neat to see the Cooper's so close-the only downside other than the
sparrow's bad luck was that the Cooper's wasn't able to take advantage of
its hard won meal.
