Hi Chris,
We do a lot of evaluations of the iliofemoral arteries prior to some cardiac
procedures. These procedures involve devices which are inserted at the
groin and passed centrally. We do not assess the venous system. We scan
the CFA as well as the iliacs, proximally and distally. We measure vessel
diameter, record velocities and note the presence of any plaque. I'd follow
up with your surgeons to see what exactly they are interested in. The
surgeons I work with seem to be mostly interested in size and where there is
any plaque.

Subject: Evaluate fem art & vein for cannulation pre-op cardiac surgery
Hey everyone,
I have an order to perform a pre-op study for a patient who will be having
cardiac surgery (tricuspid valve) repair. The patient is going to have it
done
non-sternotomy, so I assume they will be going through the groin to do this
surgery.
Anyway, the doctor has ordered the following:
"eval femoral artery for cannulation - preop robotic surgery"
"eval femoral vein for cannulation - preop robotic surgery"
My question is: Do they just want to know if the vein and artery are
patent?
Or is there more that they need to know? Such as 2D diameter of the
vessels?
I am assuming they need to know if there is any obstructive lesion in either
vessel...but what else would they need to know for a cannulation?
Thanks
Chris
