I stopped briefly at Meach Cove this afternoon hoping to catch sight of the Long-tailed Duck reported yesterday. No luck there, but there were plenty of other ducks driven into the cove by the surprisingly stiff west wind. The ducks included sizable numbers of Mallards, American Black Ducks, and Common Goldeneye as expected. In addition I counted 18 Bufflehead, 41 Ring-necked Ducks, 6 Greater Scaup, and a few Common Mergansers.
At one point most, if not all of the ducks took flight, disturbed by a large, dark eagle. I got a pretty good look at this bird and could detect no patches of white on the underwing coverts or anywhere on the body or tail. I believe that this was a Golden Eagle, rather than the more common juvenile Bald Eagle.
