There were hundreds, perhaps thousands of birds in a stubbly corn field on
the northern side of Pine Island Road off Mallets Bay Road in Colchester on
Sunday at about 6 pm evening.
My estimates, which were probably conservative, were:
500 Canada Geese
300 Ring-Billed Gulls
50 Black Ducks
As I was in the middle of counting them , something set them all up into the
air, which made me realize I had probably undercounted them.
While I was there, a mixed flock of 200 or 300 black birds flew over to the
south of the road and too far away to identified. I could see they were
black birds of various sizes.
In one of the drainage ditches there were 2 Wood Ducks (male and female).
There is a lot happening in those fields now that the snow is melting. It's
worth checking out. I will be out of town or I would be there tomorrow.
