Today on Gage Road, I instantly identified a distant soaring bird as an early Turkey Vulture: two-tone wings, slight dihedral, fanned tail. Two minutes later, though, a dark morph Rough-Legged Hawk appeared low over the ground, coming from the same direction - and I was hit by how similar those two species look! The first one could have been a TV, I suppose, but my guess is that I just didn't look closely enough and it was the hawk all along. When it got closer I was able to see the banded tail and that the wings were much narrower than a vulture's.
Fortunately, the Rough-Leggeds are on their way out of here by the time most of the Turkey Vultures arrive, so I probably haven't made that particular misidentification too often before.
