I was taught from the very beginning to compress down the leg BEFORE! taking any images. Does it take an extra minute sure BUT I know what I'm getting into. I'm investigating and it makes the images I do take make more sense. In this case I can still follow whatever my protocol is. It's important to follow the protocol and take the images in the order that is expected. If you investigate the leg first before taking your images you know if you can augment or not. I feel the extra minute I take doing this saves me worry and I am giving the patient a better exam.
