I am familiar with the bird world of Canton Valais (Verbier, Martigny, Grand St. Berhard), but Switzerland is a small country, so I imagine there isn't much of a divide.
These are some of the birds I saw last July:
Chaffinch (Buchfink)
Brambling (Bergfink)
Goldfinch (Stieglitz)
Yellowhammer (Goldhammer)
Common Linnet (Hänfling)
Red-backed Shrike (Neuntotter)
White Wagtail (Bachstellze)
Chiffcaff (Zilpzalp)
Stonechaff (Schwarzkehlchen)
Blackbird (Amsel)
Black Restart (Hausrotschwanz)
Song Thrush (Singdrossel)
Great Tit (Kohlmeise)
Blue Tit (Blaumeise)
Magpie (Elster)
Siberian Jay (Unglückshäher)
Alpine Crow (Alpenkrähe)
Starling (Star)
Barn Swallow (Rauchschwalbe)
I've probably forgotten others!
The field guide I have is the Peterson, Mountford, Hollom Field Guide to Birds of Britain and Europe - still available on Amazon for $16.46.
Have a great time!

If so, I would love to know what species I might expect to see while in the small villages such as Wengen and Grindelwald, and hiking the lower Alps to around 10000 feet. Also, can anybody recommend a good field guide for birds in Switzerland and Germany?
