This morning Pat Folsom and I took Christine Sibona, a visiting birder from
Colorado, birding around the Thurman Dix Reservoir in Barre. When we
arrived at the dam we heard one calling and then watched as two, possibly
three, flew around. Pat had visited there at the beginning of July and had
observed a Loon on a nest near the island, but today the nest was
unoccupied and a pair was seen swimming and diving very close to each
other, but no chick in sight. As we slowly progressed along the edge of the
reservoir, we again observed the Loon pair, but could hear another one
calling. As we scanned the water we finally could confirm that there was
indeed a third adult Loon and sadly, no chick.
