Yesterday while walking the road I spied what I thought to be an early fall leaf only to see thru my binos that it was a scarlet
tanager in mid-wardrobe change. It also looked to be suffering from some sort of tumor as the flank was puffed out and the feathers
in disarray.
The other day I saw some interesting behavior involving a kingfisher and great blue heron. First the kingfisher sat with its beak agape while it surveyed the
pond. Then the heron landed in a nearby tree and also had its bill agape. Upon examining my photos they showed that the heron's tongue was sticking out! It wasn't particularly hot so I don't think it was the cause for this behavior.
