Last Friday, the 22nd, Dick Harlow and I checked out the annual Scaup
raft in Goose Bay of Lake Champlain in Bridport. It was large. Dick
photographed the flock; I then used the photos to count the individual
birds. The count was 5991. This total is larger than any previously
counted scaup flock in eBird south of the Mallets Bay causeway, and the
second largest count overall. Several previous, detailed large counts
in the Champlain Bridge area and south, range from 3000 to 5250 scaup.
Greater Scaup were found in small groups and individuals irregularly
scattered in the flock, and estimated to be from between 5 and 15
percent of total birds.
