The Lake Champlain ice margin is creeping steadily northward and is now
opposite DAR State Park in Addison.
Ron Payne and I counted over 3700 waterfowl and gulls concentrated near
the ice front today, actively milling about .... except for some of the
gulls, who were placidly lounging on the ice edge.
The most interesting find for this early winter season was a single
drake Redhead. The full list is below.
Nice sightings elsewhere in our travels today included beautiful tracks
of a bobcat at DAR, numerous Red-tailed and Rough-legged Hawks, a
Northern Mockingbird on Lake Street, Bridport, two Bald Eagles -- one at
Tri-Town (Addison) and one on Rock Island in White Bay (Panton), a
Northern Shrike on Weybridge Road (Weybridge), and two Snowy Owls at the
corner of Jersey Street and Route 17 (Addison) --- which were easily
located by the number of cars pulled to the sides of both roads and
their birders with focused cameras .
