Your photo immediately made me think of a "runner", an Indian runner
duck. I don't think I've ever seen one. Probably a picture in a book, I
googled it and see an upright posture, which Is
all right. You might also search Indian runners. They are a domestic duck

Subject: [VTBIRD] Odd Mallard?
Today in Bennington :
I observed a male Mallard with an odd looking companion.
Mostly dark, both back and front ( black?) with a bright white splotch on
A not very satisfactory picture link below. Is it a Mallard/something cross?
A domestic ducky that has
found love in the wild? Any thoughts appreciated.
Also, at Shaftsbury State Park today while admiring a FOY Blue-headed Vireo,
I heard leaves rustling behind me.
Turning around ... a Grouse is walking towards me... I stand still, and
reach for the old Kodak Easy Share camera. It paraded around me
softly and sweetly clucking.
It would not be scared off! I hissed, I stomped my feet, I waved my baseball
hat at it... to no avail. Finally I was the one to
scoot down the drive.. with the bird trailing after me. Whew! Any thoughts
on this encounter. No leg bands, no clipped wings that I could see.
Was this bird finding my Deep Woods Off spray attractive? or was it my
hiking boots and blue jeans?
Link to video below.
Other birds of note: Adult Bald Eagle (I spooked from perch in tree)
Broad-winged Hawk soaring above
Lots of Ruby-crowned Kinglets, and Yellow
