This morning, as I was getting ready for work I heard two Ravens calling
over the yard. One was deep and gutteral, the other sounded high pitched
and demanding. I did not see them, but their conversation continued for a
minute or two.
This afternoon I checked in the Atlas of Breeding Birds of VT, and sure
enough Ravens do breed early. But this seems a bit too early by a few
weeks. According to the Atlas: 'the earliest records of nest building and
nests with young were March 6 and 22 April, respectively...the young hatch
after about 20 to 25 days. The young are in the nest for about 5 to 6
Ravens have nested around here for many years, but this is the earliest
I've ever heard what I believe is a recently fledged youngster.
