AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BURLINGTON VT
355 AM EDT FRI JUN 20 2014
.SYNOPSIS...
NORTHWEST FLOW ALOFT WILL CONTINUE TO PREVAIL ACROSS THE NORTH
COUNTRY INTO THE WEEKEND. ABUNDANT SUNSHINE...DRY WEATHER AND
TEMPERATURES AT OR SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL ARE EXPECTED TODAY INTO
THE WEEKEND. THE PATTERN THEN FEATURES SOUTHWEST FLOW ALOFT WITH
BY EARLY NEXT WEEK WITH A RETURN TO SUMMERTIME WARMTH AND
HUMIDITY.
&&
.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 7 PM THIS EVENING/...
AS OF 353 AM EDT FRIDAY...ANOTHER PLEASANT DAY FOR THE NORTH
COUNTRY TODAY WITH PLENTIFUL SUNSHINE AND COMFORTABLE HUMIDITY
LEVELS. THE NORTH COUNTRY WILL BE UNDER A NORTHERLY PRESSURE
GRADIENT BETWEEN A SLOW-MOVING SFC LOW OVER THE CANADIAN MARITIMES
AND AN AREA OF SFC HIGH PRESSURE OVER JAMES BAY. THE COMBINATION
OF COLD AIR ADVECTION (THOUGH TRENDING MORE NEUTRAL BY LATE IN THE
DAY) AND DAYTIME HEATING WILL ALLOW FOR STEEP WELL-MIXED LOW-LEVEL
LAPSE RATES AND OCCASIONAL NORTHERLY GUSTS TO 25 MPH. THOUGH
MOISTURE IS LIMITED...STILL COULD SEE A FEW FAIR WX CUMULUS AROUND
ESPECIALLY IN VICINITY OF THE GREENS AND ADIRONDACKS. THERMAL
PROFILES ARE A COUPLE DEGREES COOLER THAN YESTERDAY WITH 850 MB
TEMPS AROUND +4 TO +6C...WHICH UNDER MOSTLY SUNNY SKIES SHOULD
PRODUCE HIGHS FROM THE MID/UPPER 60S TO THE LOW/MID 70S.
&&
.SHORT TERM /7 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH SUNDAY/...
AS OF 353 AM EDT FRIDAY...IT IS SHAPING UP TO BE A GREAT WEEKEND
WEATHER-WISE WITH ABUNDANT SUNSHINE AND DRY CONDITIONS CONTINUING
THROUGH THE WEEKEND. TEMPERATURES START OFF A FEW DEGREES BELOW
NORMAL FOR MID TO LATE JUNE BUT BECOME CLOSER TO NORMAL BY THE END
OF THE WEEKEND. THE NORTH COUNTRY WILL CONTINUE TO BE UNDER
CYCLONIC MID-LEVEL FLOW THROUGH MUCH OF THE PERIOD. GIVEN LIMITED
MOISTURE IT SHOULD ONLY RESULT IN DIURNALLY-DRIVEN FAIR WX CUMULUS
CLOUDS...WITH CLEAR SKIES AND LIGHT WINDS PROMOTING STRONG
RADIATIONAL COOLING AT NIGHT. THE COVERAGE OF THOSE CUMULUS CLOUDS
WOULD LIKELY BE GREATEST ON SATURDAY AIDED BY A VORTICITY MAX
WHICH MOVES SOUTHEASTWARD FROM QUEBEC. MID-LEVEL HEIGHTS THEN
BEGIN TO RISE SATURDAY NIGHT INTO SUNDAY.
850 MB TEMPS RISE A COUPLE OF DEGREES EACH DAY EVENTUALLY REACHING
+10C BY SUNDAY AFTERNOON. 00Z MAV AND MET MOS GUIDANCE NUMBERS ARE
ALL WITHIN A COUPLE DEGREES OF EACH OTHER SO GOOD AGREEMENT THERE
AS WELL. LOOKING AT HIGHS IN THE 70S SATURDAY AND SUNDAY...WITH
LOWS GENERALLY IN THE 40S TO AROUND 50 IN THE VALLEYS FOR FRIDAY
NIGHT AND INTO THE 40S TO LOW 50S SATURDAY NIGHT.
&&
.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
AS OF 354 AM EDT FRIDAY...INCREASINGLY WARM AND HUMID WEATHER IS EXPECTED
FOR MONDAY AND TUESDAY...FOLLOWED BY THE THREAT FOR SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS LATE TUESDAY INTO WEDNESDAY ALONG A COLD FRONT
APPROACHING FROM THE WEST. A RETURN TO DRIER AND MORE SEASONABLE
TEMPERATURES IS EXPECTED WEDNESDAY NIGHT INTO THURSDAY IN THE WAKE
OF A COLD FRONT.
SURFACE HIGH PRESSURE EXPECTED TO BE IN PLACE ACROSS NEW ENGLAND
SUNDAY NIGHT WILL GRADUALLY MOVE EWD INTO THE GULF OF MAINE ON
MONDAY. AT THE SAME TIME...MID-TROPOSPHERIC FLOW PATTERN TRANSITIONS
FROM NORTHWEST TO SOUTHWEST...AND SETS THE STAGE FOR INCREASING
LOW-LEVEL MOISTURE AND WARMER TEMPERATURES. 850MB TEMPERATURES ON
THE 00Z GFS INCREASE FROM +11C AT 18Z MONDAY TO +14C AT 18Z TUESDAY
AND AROUND +15C WEDNESDAY MORNING. THE 00Z ECMWF IS CONSISTENT WITH
THIS IDEA. GENERALLY FOLLOWED BLEND OF GFS/ECMWF MOS
GUIDANCE...WHICH BRINGS HIGHS INTO THE LOW 80S MONDAY...AND MID 80S
IN THE WARMER VALLEYS TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY. GENERALLY LOOKING AT
DRY WEATHER UNTIL COLD FRONT MOVES IN FROM THE GREAT LAKES REGION
LATE TUESDAY AFTN OR DURING THE DAY WEDNESDAY. TIMING UNCERTAINTIES
EXIST AT THIS POINT...SO KEPT POPS 30-50 PERCENT TUESDAY AFTN INTO
WEDNESDAY. SHOULD SEE MODERATE SURFACE BASED INSTABILITY WITH SFC
DEWPOINTS IN THE MID 60S...SO A FEW STRONGER THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE
POSSIBLE...ESPECIALLY IF BEST SYNOPTIC FORCING IS COINCIDENT WITH
DAYTIME HEATING ON WEDNESDAY. WE WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR. FRONT
USHERS IN DRIER AIR MASS AND MORE SEASONABLE TEMPERATURES WEDNESDAY
NIGHT AND THURSDAY. HIGHS ON THURSDAY GENERALLY IN THE UPPER 70S
WITH DEWPOINTS LIKELY BACK INTO THE UPR 50S.
&&
.AVIATION /08Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
THROUGH 12Z SATURDAY...VFR. MID-LEVEL CLOUDS LINGER IN CYCLONIC
FLOW ACROSS CENTRAL AND NRN NY EARLY THIS MORNING...BUT CEILINGS
ARE GENERALLY ABOVE 6000 FT. OTHERWISE...VFR...BECOMING CLEAR FOR
THE DAYLIGHT HRS AND THEN SCT250 FOR TONIGHT. WINDS GENERALLY NW
AROUND 5 KTS...INCREASING TO AROUND 10KT FOR THE 14-22Z
PERIOD...AND THEN LIGHT AND VARIABLE AGAIN TONIGHT.
OUTLOOK 12Z SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY...
VFR AND GENERALLY LIGHT WINDS UNDER HIGH PRESSURE. NOCTURNAL MVFR
TO IFR POSSIBLE ESPECIALLY KSLK/KMPV IN RADIATION FOG 06-12Z EACH
MORNING. PRECIPITATION IS NOT EXPECTED AT LEAST THROUGH MONDAY. AN
APPROACHING FRONT FROM THE WEST WILL BRING A CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS ON TUESDAY AFTERNOON INTO TUESDAY EVENING.
&&
.BTV WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...

NY...NONE.
