DIVERSIFIED HORTICULTURE FARM MANAGER
The Basin Harbor Club is looking for a farm manager to assist with
initial farm design, and to oversee daily operations of a diversified
vegetable, herb and ornamental enterprise that will supply our resort
facilities with fresh produce and landscape plants.
We have 2 acres available for immediate production and an additional 6
acres for future uses. A 20’ x 80’ greenhouse, numerous tractors,
cultivators, seeders, cold boxes, wash stations, irrigation, compost
operation and much more are available to support with enterprise, with
potential for additional infrastructure development as needed.
Basin Harbor is located in Vergennes, Vermont, next to Lake Champlain.
We host four seasonal restaurants serving over 750 meals a day between
from May through October, with fresh produce and being used in all
locations. Approximately 14,000 plants are used each year for ornamental
plantings adorning the 120 buildings on the property.
The Farm Manager is responsible for:
Overall production of crops, including: ordering seeds, planning
rotations, scheduling plantings; managing soil fertility and pests;
applying irrigation as needed; sowing cover crops; harvesting, washing
and preparing crops for use, storing appropriately if needed;
maintaining detailed records, etc.
Working with the Executive Chef to determine the quantity, quality and
timing of crops needed; maintaining ongoing communication about the
supply of crops; determining value of crops supplied; using feedback to
improve operations and increase the value of crops supplied.
Working with the Director of Engineering to help plan innovative new
enterprises for Basin Harbor’s Environmental Innovation Center,
potentially including oil seed crops, fuel crops, winter production of
leafy greens, etc. The Center already includes a full scale food
composting facility, waste vegetable oil processing, 150 kw solar array,
and proud members of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program.
Minimum requirements: Demonstrated knowledge of diversified
horticultural production, at least 3 years of work experience in
commercial farming, ability to work independently and also as part of a
team, willingness to engage in the hard physical labor associated with
farming, knowledge of horticultural equipment operation, and the ability
to keep detailed records.
This is a full time position, with salary dependent on experience. The
potential exists for revenue sharing through the sale of excess crops.
Basin Harbor Club was established in 1886 by Ardelia Beach and has
remained family owned for 128 years. Today, guests are greeted by fourth
generation hosts, Pennie Beach and Robert H. Beach, Jr. and fifth
generation Sarah Morris, Director of Sales. Originally a 225-acre
working farm catering to summer boarders, the resort has expanded to
cover 700 acres on Lake Champlain, encompassing the main lodge,
cottages, a private golf course, spectacular gardens and a 3,200 foot grass.
