Hello Vermont Birders:
I stopped by Shelburne Bay briefly at 10:30 this morning. The conditions
were just about worst case scenario in terms of visibility with high wind
and sideways light rain.
On the mudflats east of the river mouth was a small cluster of shorebirds.
Most conspicuous among them was a juvenile Sanderling. It was joined by
three juvenile Pectoral Sandpipers and two more peeps. I am quite confident
the other two shorebirds were White-rumped Sandpipers but between the
shaking of my scope and the water on my optics, I won't commit to that ID.
Bonaparte's Gulls were working the surf at the river mouth.
In light of the thread on this listserv earlier, I will be entering an
incomplete eBird checklist. I was focused on birding the entire time I was
at the site but I didn't bother to scan the lake since the rain would have
instantly ruined my lenses if I looked into the wind. I probably missed the
Atlantic Puffin just offshore.
Good birding,
Eric
