I poked along the Connecticut River near the Mass border today on my way back from NY, and found a few noteworthy birds, as follows:
In fields at the end of Blodgett Road: a single drake Northern Pintail in with a mess of Mallards, and a single Snow Goose flying northish overhead
Above Vernon Dam (as viewed from Hinsdale NH): most waterfowl were massed against the VT bank (which here IS in VT, vs. most of the river), where highlights included 5 Mute Swans (a state bird for me, actually!), 5 Lesser Scaup, and 2 Long-tailed Ducks. A Common Loon and 34 Hooded Mergansers were the highlights on the NH side.
In Brattleboro I walked the edge of the cornfield north of Retreat Meadows and had a lot of activity. 4 Red-bellied Woodpeckers, 26 American Tree Sparrows, 1 Savannah Sparrow, 1 Winter Wren, and a Belted Kingfisher were the highlights.
Enjoy, and Happy New Year,
