Back in June, I took a picture of an odd-looking pigeon at my feeders but didnít post it because I convinced myself it was just one of the many different plumages of everyday feral pigeons. It turned out to be a Band-tailed Pigeon - but I didnít identify it for two and a half months.
Today I photographed another odd-looking feeder bird, another dove. It looked like a Mourning Dove in many ways (pink feet, dark spots, black bordered wing tips), but it appeared longer and bulkier than a nearby Mourning Dove. The white eye ring was more pronounced than Iíve seen in Mourning Doves, and there was something odd about the top of its head. It didnít make the characteristic noise when it took off. Also, I didnít notice any white edges to the tail when it was walking around or when it flew, although one of the photos suggests white there.
I canít think of anything it could be other than a Mourning Dove Ė but having been burned by the Band-tailed Pigeon, I decided Iíd better let others take a look.
