Ken - here in Schenectady, NY I had a newly fledged, wing-fluttering, juvenile with a still completely black bill being fed by daddy on 9/26 which is the latest I've seen here. Cardinals can be double- even triple-brooded. Perhaps something this year prompted early breeding that led to another try (or two), or conditions during the summer prompted further breeding. Hard to tell.

Subject: [VTBIRD] Late Cardinal fledgling
Last evening I was surprised to see a male Cardinal with a begging
fledgling.
While it didn't look as if it was just out of the nest, its
fuzzy and unkempt
appearance indicated it was still fairly young. Seems
late, even for a
resident species.
